Hand Tool Woodworking | Faux Dovetail Spline
Feel free to enable closed captioning for step by step build details, or leave them off to enjoy an ASMR building experience!
This frame was built almost entirely with hand tools, using hand saws and planes to mill the walnut, a plow plane for the groove for the glass and the rabbet for the back panel, a custom 45 degree shooting board for the mitered joints, and a hand saw to cut the dovetail angled splines. The splines are poplar and are planed to thickness by hand, as the width must be precise to within a few thousands of an inch to get a good glue joint. The front is glass 3/32" thick, the back is plexiglass. The back panel is held on by screws so it can be removed and the inside of the frame cleaned out periodically.
I want to thank each and every one of you for watching my videos, liking them, leaving comments, and subscribing. I've been making videos for over 5 years now and I never thought I would reach this milestone.
More important than number of subscribers, though, is my interaction with you all. I've learned so much from comments from more experienced woodworkers, and I've also learned to see projects from all sorts of different angles thanks to comments from beginners and casual viewers.
Thanks for watching. Feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts, and don't forget to subscribe if you like content like this!

Heirloom Flag Display Case | Quiet Woodworking
Переглядів 12 тис.Рік тому
My grandfather used to say "a job worth doing is a job worth doing well", so I decided to put in the effort to build a finely crafted display case for his service flag. He was in the US Navy. I designed this case myself and built it out of black walnut. In this video I build the display case and I add descriptive comments and thought processes as subtitles, if you are interested in the details....
Don't buy a router plane! Build one instead.
Переглядів 89 тис.Рік тому
Router planes are one of the most useful and important specialty planes for any hand tool woodworker. Unfortunately antique planes can be rare and modern planes can be really expensive. Fortunately router planes are one of the easiest planes to make yourself and end up with something very precise... especially when you buy the parts from @Paul.Sellers ! In this video I build the Paul Sellers ro...
Avoid this beginner mistake with saw blades
Переглядів 252 тис.Рік тому
A common fix for burn marks on circular saw cuts is to try to sharpen the blade. AVOID THIS TEMPTATION! You'll either waste time, money, or a perfectly good blade. Watch this video to see how to save all three of those things by fixing your blade for free in under five minutes. Burn marks can happen with a number of power tools including circular saws, miter saws, and table saws. There are lots...
You haven't seen a hatchet handle like this (no power tools)
Переглядів 45 тис.Рік тому
I recently snapped the handle on my hatchet so I decided to make an even better handle to replace it. I built this handle out of laminated layers of poplar, cherry, and walnut. These aren't usually the best woods for hatchet and axe handles (like hickory or ash) but the lamination process makes them stronger. I carved this handle entirely with hand tools, no electrons were harmed in the making ...
DIY Closet Organization on a Budget | Repurposing Lumber
Переглядів 18 тис.2 роки тому
I literally paid $7.88 for materials to DIY renovate this closet. Almost. By using the old closet doors for plywood construction material I was able to build customizable shelving and a removable shoe rack basically for free. The shelving and shoe rack are made with rabbet and dado joinery, which is both technically simple to do, and is extremely strong. I ended up purchasing some iron on edge ...

Awesome video! Very inspired. Just what I was looking. Thank you
I love this build so much, I'd love to make myself something similar one day ^^
Most satisfying video I've ever seen. Real masterpiece! Great work. Subscribed!

Staggeringly good 👏
Are you volodymyr zelenskyy? 😅
The nail on the floor tip is awesome 🎉
THANK YOU
Good work. The beveled edge provides a remarkably graceful line, coupled with the recessed skirt and tapered legs.
An interesting way to achieve a large number of pounds per square inch!
Sorry. Had to laugh. The vice handle has done this to me as well. Hahah
If you offer plans for your projects I’d buy a few to make copies of your designs for my home.
Thanks for the feedback! I have high quality plans for my crib, dining room table, and kitchen island for sale on my Etsy page, check it out!
13:54 I know that look well.
Impressive and thoughtful
Teşekkürler
Love to see a fellow student of Steve’s on YT! I am your latest fan-sub. I started woodworking in 2021 after my retirement, took Steve’s course and haven’t looked back. My shop is small-1 car garage so everything must be mobile for when I need to park the car. I look forward to more of your content❤.
... superb conclusion, calling to mind Michelangelo: "the sculpture is already complete ... I just have to chisel away the superfluous material."
The whole process was mesmerising to watch. The simplicity of the design, coupled with your attention to detail equals perfection. What an exquisite end product. Well done.
Ya and how do you clean it out every year don't you think you need to hinge the bottom😮
thanks
This video is really a great tutorial for beginners like me! The steps are explained very clearly and in detail, which helped me understand the woodworking process better.
❤❤❤👍👍👍
Gorgeous table, simplicity is the essence of elegance. I am about to embark on a similar project using mahogany, which is more affordable but harder to work with due to grain structure. Thanks for posting!
Wonderful stunning piece of craftmanship so wonderful to watch yep i know how frustrating it is when stuff falls on the floor !!!! still a master piece to be proud of Nice work !!!!
Thank you for the tip, I’m going to try it on my chainsaw blades also.
Very late to the part here, but you've inspired me! I built a few boxes with varying degrees of success but your way of re-sawing thicker wood has a true lightbulb. moment for me!
For context, how many hours did this take in real time?
(excluding dry time)
Very nice 👍🏻
wow man! excellent job!! very nice ....everything!!
I may have missed it but what hard wax oil did you use?
The look on your face when the leg falls off the table happens to me at least once per project. 😂
where are the plans?
Legal demais!!!!
You need narration!
Thanks for the feedback!
Hey question - I cut some “lifeproof” flooring with my blades. I’m assuming there’s some weird adhesive or whatever in them. Would this help to clean off that nastiness? I kid you not, my blades cause immense amounts of smoke now. Would love to just clean off and reuse.
I bet this would help! If not, maybe try something more aggressive to remove the adhesive like nailpolish remover?
@@dkbuilds yeah, cleaned them up amazing - mirror finish, but can’t cut worth anything. They’re truly dull. Flooring is awful to blades. Live and learn.
I just found your channel and watched this video. You drew me in! I had to subscribe. It's nice to watch someone take the time to work with wood the old fashioned way and turn out such a beautiful table. What you do takes skill and patience. No hurry...you get there when you get there. It's a great life lesson that you obviously take to heart (centering after watching the leg disappear off the table...🙂). Great video...I'll be watching more. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the kind feedback, Douglas! Welcome to the channel!

What was that little black chisel tool thingie you used to clean up the dado channel at 4:14?
Great question! That is called a router plane, in this case it is the Lie Nielsen small router plane
@@dkbuilds thank you! Ima get me one of those.
the part sticking out make a place for the predators gain access
Thanks for the feedback!
I absolutely LOVE the fact that you didn't hide the splitting of that board. Who knows how bad you actually lost your sh*t though lol. I've been teaching myself dovetails for the past few weeks, and I've gotta tell you, I would have had to start the whole thing over before seeing this video. You see all the big wig woodworkers, and their projects always seem to work out perfectly on the first try. I feel that's never the case, and gives a false sense of how it should be done. Mistakes should be shown. How they are looked at and corrected is a huge part of learning the art of woodworking. Hella nice box btw. The dovetails... Superb. 👏 Bravo!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the transparency in the video! <3
Will the desktop mainly deform without wearing straps? 桌面不做穿带,以后不会变形吗?
No it will not. The multiple clips connecting the top to the legs and apron rails will prevent warping.

@@dkbuilds Thank you for your reply. I really like your video.
This is a beautiful table.
Thank you so much!
Wow!! It turned out great!! Super beautiful 😍
Thanks so much! :)
Very nice job bro, it's incredible all dedication and patient...!
Thanks bro!
Hello! What oil did you coat the surface with?
Hello! I use Arm-R-Seal wipe on polyurethane. Many, many coats :)
How do you mount it to a wall?
Good question! I attached a string to the roof and hung it from a branch.
